I told you I was all over the place, didn’t I?
There’s a section in the Substack settings where you describe your publication using a list of categories in a drop-down menu. All Over the Place is categorized as ‘Travel’ and ‘Culture.’ Oddly enough, no categories exist for ‘Nostalgic’ or ‘Wistful.’
I struggle to write about a place I’ve been without remembering how I felt there, or how much I miss it. I’m also trying to write more about the present, though I often get the feeling that I’m living in the past or the future. I can promise you I will try to write about all my destinations and thoroughfares, including chic European capitals and rural Alabamian speed-trap towns.
I started All Over the Place in Washington, D.C., where life was mostly cruel rejections in my budding journalism career and I hardly traveled at all. This newsletter was a lifeline back then.
Enjoy. Or don’t. I’ll try not to lose sleep over it.
With love, joy, guilt and all these immense feelings,
Serena
